Rainwater Collection System Design and Integration
Sustainable water, lower costs, greater autonomy.
Custom rainwater capture systems let yachts supplement freshwater supplies by harvesting and purifying rainfall on deck and hardtop surfaces. With marine-grade components, multi-stage filtration, and smart integration into existing plumbing, you reduce generator hours, extend time between marina stops, and protect your watermaker from overuse.
Why install a rainwater collection system?
  • Eco-friendly supply – Cut reliance on shore water and energy-intensive desalination by using a natural resource available on passage and at anchor.
  • Lower operating costs – Fewer dockside refills and reduced watermaker runtime mean tangible savings over a season.
  • Potable water quality – Sediment and carbon filters followed by UV sterilization deliver safe, great-tasting water without heavy chemical dosing.
  • True autonomy – Extra capacity for showers, washdowns, laundry, and emergency reserves keeps you away from crowded fuel docks longer.
What we do at yachtservice.me
  • Custom design for your yacht’s deck geometry, superstructure, and usage profile
  • Marine-grade installation with UV-stable, corrosion-resistant components
  • Seamless integration with tanks, gauges, and existing filtration/watermakers
  • Calibration & commissioning of pumps, pressures, and UV dose
  • Crew training & maintenance plans for filters, tanks, and seasonal care
How the system works
  1. Capture – Subtle gutters/collection lips on hardtops and decks route rain via screened inlets that block leaves, salt spray splatter, and debris.
  2. Pre-filter – Inline strainers and mesh filters remove larger particles before storage.
  3. Storage – Dedicated or shared tanks (UV-resistant, food-grade) fitted with breathers, level senders, and inspection ports.
  4. Polish & protect – Multi-stage cartridge filtration (sediment → carbon) and UV sterilization at point-of-use or tank outlet.
  5. Distribution – Pressure-set pumps deliver consistent flow to domestic plumbing; backflow prevention protects the system and watermaker.
Typical component set
  • Deck/roof gutters with anti-debris screens
  • Food-grade hoses and fittings (316L/duplex where metallic)
  • Pre-filters (50–100 µm) and fine sediment filters (5–20 µm)
  • Activated carbon block for taste/odor/chlorine reduction
  • UV sterilizer (monitored lamp life, flow-matched)
  • Diaphragm or multistage pump with accumulator and bypass
  • Non-return valves, isolation manifolds, and tank level integration
Our process
1) Survey & design – Measure effective catchment areas, rainfall profiles for your cruising grounds, expected daily demand, and tank strategy.
2) Sourcing – Select lightweight, UV-stable tanks, certified hoses, and low-draw pumps matched to your electrical system.
3) Installation – Fabricate and mount channels, plumb to tanks, add filtration/UV, and integrate sensors into your monitoring displays.
4) Calibration – Set pressures/flows, verify UV dose, and label valve logic for crew.
5) Testing & handover – Wet tests in varied conditions, crew training, service schedule, and spares list.
Common problems we solve
  • Running short on water offshore – Add captured rain to extend time between stops.
  • High costs from refills & desalination – Reduce generator run hours and filtration consumables.
  • Questionable water quality – Proper filtration + UV eliminates microbial risk and improves taste.
  • Integration headaches – Clean manifolds, clear labeling, and backflow protection prevent leaks and cross-contamination.
Maintenance & ownership
  • Replace sediment/carbon cartridges on hours or differential-pressure cues.
  • Annual UV lamp replacement and quartz sleeve clean.
  • Periodic tank inspections; sanitize as per schedule.
  • Pre-season test of pump pressures, NRVs, and alarm setpoints.
FAQs
Is rainwater safe to drink on a yacht?
Yes—when passed through properly sized sediment/carbon filters and UV sterilization. We design for potable standards and verify flow/UV dose at commissioning.
Can I use existing tanks?
Often yes. We add isolation valves, non-return protection, and labeling. Some owners choose a dedicated “rain tank” as a buffer.
Will fittings change the look of my yacht?
Collection edges are discreet and color-matched where possible. We avoid visible clutter and keep drainage paths self-cleaning.
What about salt spray and soot on deck?
First-flush diversion and fine pre-filters prevent contamination entering tanks. Crew procedures (brief rinse after dry spells) further improve quality.
Power draw and noise?
We specify low-draw pumps with accumulators for quiet operation. UV units are efficient and sized to your flow rates.
